A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man

James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a landmark in the history of the English novel, though few readers can really enjoy it. It is a remarkable book but it has no "popular" appeal. Its theme is abstract, being the development of a mind or soul; and its style of writing is not simple or lucid. It is a psychological novel, concerned with the inner consciousness of the hero. It has scanty external action, and the element of love (which every reader seeks in a work of fiction) in it, is negligible. On the whole, it offers tough reading.

The present book is intended to meet the examination requirements of university students but it also endeavours to bring Joyce's novel within the comprehension of readers. Almost every aspect of the novel has adequately been dealt with and every effort has been made to acquaint the student with different approaches to it.
